Charity and altruism

20 October, 2018

If you do something charitable, should you tell people about it?

If you tell someone to feel good about yourself and what you've done, does that mean it not's perfect altruism anymore (devaluing the charitable act you did), because other people have recognised how much of an angel you are as a person?

If you don't tell anyone, you're not showing off how good a person you are anymore, and you'll feel good about that, instead. Does that make it not altruism?

What do you do - do you tell someone, so you don't fall into that trap? Does this just go round in circles? Is it a Byzantine Generals problem - can bitcoin save us? (this sounds very unoriginal, and has a good ratio of 1 question mark per sentence)
